THE AGE OF ISMS
QUESTIONS TO THINK ABOUT AS YOU READ
- How did conservatives attempt to repair the damage of the Napoleonic period and maintain traditional political authority?
- How did middle-class liberals justify their wish for equality along with their mistreatment of the lower class?
- What new ideological movements attempted to better the lives of workers, women, and slaves?
- How can the Romantic movement be seen as a response to the Industrial Revolution and nationalistic revolts?

Skim through, the two Power Points below and as a group, select one art piece or piece of literature that you believe epitomizes the meaning the Romanticism. Write a summary, by adding a slide to the Power Point using Keynote, describing the work and identifying characteristics of Romantic art that are present in it. The summary should (A) give basic facts about the work (artist, title, date, medium), (B) describe what the work depicts, AND (C) analyze the work for characteristics of Romanticism (consider the description of Romanticism in your textbook as well as the list of characteristics provided on the handout titled “Introduction to Neoclassical, Romantic, and Realist Art”). If there is a story behind the painting, you must also do some research on it, and include the information on the slide. Cite your source. DO NOT PLAGIARIZE!!
